Rufous Fantail

G’day Readers,
Tony’s entry on a Lovely Fairy Wren on a very exposed nest reminded me of a sighting Duncan and I had back in February 2006. This Rufous Fantail had nested barely a metre above the ground right beside a four wheel drive track. Over several days, we were able to get some beaut shots of a wonderful little bush bird.

Just as in Tony’s case, we were concerned about the vulnerability, particularly of the nestlings. Kookaburras, Butcherbirds, etc had all been sighted nearby. As far as we can tell, the fantails were successful in rearing their brood, that year at least.

Gotta get back in there DF.
Regards,
Gouldiae

And this is the first time I see a Rufous Fantail – beautiful birds and skillful nest-builders.

  5. Thanks All,
Yes, it was a wonderful thing to be able to follow the progress of the hatchlings. A beaut little bird. One of my favourite memories of this bird is seeing one flit through some bush with rays of sunlight highlighting the wings and tail.
